The process of globalisation, changes in the economical-political landscape
at the end of the 20th century, a rise in the safety requirements linked to the
development of new aircraft technology has caused dynamic progress in the
aircraft industry and related industries.
Low cost airlines have moved into the traditional civil aviation market offering
a service for clients of low cost alternative to traditional methods of aircraft
travel, whilst ensuring that the requirements of safety and punctuality of
flights are maintained, while the bare minimum of extra comforts are necessary
to keep an efficient service.
It is estimated that the low cost sector of the civil aviation industry is a
constantly growing area and play an increasing role in the overall amount of
aircraft passengers each year.
The process of cheap airlines entering the global market has caused major
changes in companies with long traditions, airline alliances are being formed to
counter the low cost airlines with the aim of lowering costs.
By far the largest influence of low cost airlines has the rise in the amount of
new passengers and the raising the accessibility of aircraft transport.
Since the accession of Poland into the European Union as of the 1st of May 2004,
Poland has become an important potential market for low cost airlines.
The Polish government, aware that the reserve capacity of the Frederyk Chopin
International Airport in Warsaw is diminishing year by year, started to identify
the potential sites for the location of a new airport site to cater for the
international travel needs of passengers in central Poland. Of the seven
potential locations which were proposed, the airport site in Warsaw is important,
viable proposition.
Due to the fact that federal government decisions did not take place in the
originally announced time-frame, the Local Governments of the Sochaczew District
and their representative, The SOCHACZEW Airport Association, decided to proceed
with the project to convert the existing Air Force base into a civil aviation
airport catering for the needs of low cost airlines, charter flights and cargo.
The Sochaczew airport project aims at allowing the fast
transfer of "difficult" flights from Warsaw airport, to allow the Fryderyk
Chopin International Airport to maintain a "city" airport standard and to use
the enormous amount of potential which the Sochaczew airport project possesses.
The process of preparation and commissioning of the
Sochaczew Airport project is estimated to take 2 - 3 year and require an
investment of initially 200mln zloty, which in comparison to a green field
airport, is a significant reduction in time and cost for such a project.
