The existing military airport covers a level area of 660 hectares outside
Sochaczew’s town boundary. It’s situated 5 km south-east of Sochaczew’s city
limits and 54 km west of central Warsaw. The site is the property of the State
Treasury and is managed by the Air Force Airport Infrastructure Management Group.
The site consists of a 2500 m long, 60 m wide runway, with a
concrete-asphalt surface possessing an excellent pressure index, overrun areas
for increased safety, and a parallel, grass-surfaced runway. It has its own
backup power supply. The area is also both legally and administratively zoned as
an airport.
Importantly, the proposed airport site boasts natural acoustic protection
against noise in the form of 150 hectares of forest.
The site’s past service as a military airport also showed it to have
favourable aviational and climatic conditions. In view of its past use, limits
such as the restriction of development in the zone and of building heights in
the Sochaczew area are still currently enforced.
The Sochaczew region also noticeably lacks the high air pollution often caused
by excessive industrial activity.
